It’s been a while since Greta Gerwig’s long-awaited Barbie movie hit the big screen. Not that you missed it, because you couldn’t ignore it: everything was – and still is – Barbie through and through. Also in the marketing world where various organizations have immersed themselves in the world of pink and glitter.
I understand the Barbie craze. As a little girl I had a few Barbies and a book collection that was second to none. In every book Barbie had a new profession. Funny enough, there were never books published like ‘Barbie as a marketer’ or – even more so now – ‘Barbie as an influencer’. While she has now managed to get all kinds of brands involved in the hype.
Barbie as a marketer
We ourselves had to study for X number of years, Barbie just does it in a few months. Well… not alone of course. Because Warner Bros and Mattel have helped a lot to immerse the marketing world in the pink glitter.
It started with the trailer. From the moment the first images of the film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were shared, the proverbial Barbie train set off on a long, successful ride. Everyone was amazed by images from the set and intrigued by the tagline. One that ensures that Barbie is a hit with a huge target group.
If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.
That already generated a lot of conversation. Social media really didn’t stop talking when the ‘high heel’ scene appeared. Barbie steps out of her pink slippers and then stands upright on the tips of her toes. This was followed by a press tour where we saw Margot Robbie ao lists in the most iconic Barbie outfits in history. From the “Totally Hair” look from 1992 to the ‘Enchanted Evening” Barbie from 1960.

Even after the film hit the big screen in late July, the Barbie hype continued. Warner Bros. and Mattel joined forces with various brands. And that resulted in a lot of fun collaborations. Google got a touch of Barbie by means of easter eggs. Just search for Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling or Greta Gerwig in the search engine. A nice nod to my first article on Frankwatching .
